Systems Engineer
We are looking for an aspiring Systems Engineer generalist to join the IT/Ops team. A successful candidate is likely to have 4 or more years of experience in technical support or Linux systems administration; homelab experience can be valuable.

There is an overnight on-call rotation. We now average less than one night a month where that involves actually being woken up -- we'd like to make that zero, and you'll have power to help make those changes.
This Team Handles:
- building and maintaining environments for development, test, and production
- building and maintaining internal & colo networks
- helping to maintain IT infrastructure services
- some minor desktop user support - MacOS and Linux
- automating work with our configuration management systems
- documenting work so that you are happy to see it at 3AM
- learning project planning, budgeting, and resource management
- and everything else that could possibly fall under the IT/Operations umbrella in a small company
Our technology stack includes: Debian Linux, a systems automation suite called Tuttle, Chef, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Ruby, Rails, C++, Perl, git, svn. We use RequestTracker for ticketing. Juniper networking equipment.
What we need from you:
- You have a few years of IT support and/or systems administration.
- You are comfortable shell scripting and are learning one or more of Perl, Python, Ruby, etc.
- You are clever, competent, and kind.
- You can clearly communicate in English, both written and verbal.
- You are, or can convincingly fake being, detail-oriented and conscientious.
Other Useful skills include:
- mail, web, DNS, routing, firewalls, NAT, ZFS, writing monitoring scripts, using ticketing systems, Postgres, Chef, Debian packaging. Prior experience in a production-oriented role is good. Using any sort of configuration management or automation system is good.
Our offices are a few minutes walk from North Station in Boston, MA, and practically on top of Bowdoin Station on the Blue Line. There's parking near us, a bike rack and our own shower. Dress is casual. Working hours can be flexible. Regular work-from-home is encouraged. This is not an all-remote position.
This role is WFH-friendly but requires the ability to frequently be in the Boston area, and occasionally (1-3x year) travel. Core hours are 10 am - 4 pm EST.
